447 - AS IV.104. Design for an obelisk adorned with the monogram of William III. Drawn by Hawksmoor to a scale of 2½ ft to an inch (assuming the given dimensions are feet). This gives a height of 42 ft. Brown ink over pencil. 539 x 377 mm. Watermark: Strasbourg lily WR.

Wren_448_ASC_IV_105

448 - AS IV.105    (click to view in Digital.Bodleian)

448 - AS IV.105. Design for a giant monogram, drawn by Hawksmoor to a scale of 2 ft to an inch (drawn scale). The design is 20 ft wide and probably a giant banner or temporary hanging. Brown ink and pencil. 452 x 377 mm. Watermark: P.

Note to 447-448: Probably made for a state occasion. The interlaced fretwork in 447 suggests an open timber structure.
