408 - AS II.77. Design for a festoon, probably drawn to full scale. The baluster as drawn is 14 in. high. The plinth suggests an interior setting. Brown ink shaded with grey wash. 578 x 699 mm (in four pasted sheets: sheet 1 (top L), 240 x 373 mm; sheet 2 (bottom L), 369 x 292 mm; sheet 3 (bottom centre), 368 x 291 mm; sheet 4 (bottom R), 318 x 152 mm). Wren_409_ASC_II_78

409 - AS II.78    (click to view in Digital Bodleian)

409 - AS II.78. Design for a pomegranate festoon, probably drawn to full scale. The full festoon would be 2 ft 10½ in. wide. Pencil and grey wash. 419 x 585 mm. Watermark: Strasbourg bend. Endorsed in pencil by an early hand: Rough Designe of Architecture.

Note to 408-409: These drawings are from different hands and not necessarily related. The architectural vocabulary of 408 implies an early date, while 409 should be compared with the bas-relief panels on the exterior of St Pauls's Cathedral (WS 15, pls. 30–35). They are the only drawings of their kind in the collection.
