418 - AS I.81. Design for an urn, probably in the hand of Caius Gabriel Cibber. Drawn to a scale of just over 1 ft to an inch (drawn scale). The design is 6½ ft high (excluding the plinth). Brown ink over pencil, shaded with brown wash. 197 x 277 mm. Watermark: H. Endorsed in ink: Diligensa / Vigilansa / Prudensa a / Constansa.

Note to 418: The heavily washed draughtsmanship is almost certainly Cibber's (compare Downes 1988, no. 199, and Higgott 2007: SM 110/63 (WS 4, title-page)). Cibber supplied a large urn for the Privy Garden at Hampton Court in 1690 (HKW 5.171; Thurley 2003, fig. 222; WS 17, pls. 7–8). It is tempting to associate the inscription on the back of the sheet with Cibber's time in Italy (Gunnis 1953, 101).
