423 (a and b) - AS II.88. Elevation of a Composite capital, drawn to a scale of just under half a foot to an inch (drawn scale). Probably made by Hawksmoor in the mid-1690s. The R half of the drawing is unfinished. Brown ink over pencil, shaded with grey wash. 222 x 256 mm. Watermark: Strasbourg bend (bottom half only). On verso: pencil studies by Wren for an entablature profile (L), three impost profiles (R), and nine sketches for grilles, several with interlaced CC.

Note to 423: The design is just over 2 ft 4½ in. wide. Similar capitals occur on the tower of St Vedast, Foster Lane, and on the dome and W towers of St Paul's Cathedral. The grille panels on the back of sheet probably relate to the choir fittings at St Paul's (compare WS 15, pls. 82, 102).
