Roof ornaments


Two designs by Grinling Gibbons, probably intended for Blenheim Palace. Both sheets are tinted with a yellow wash. Neither drawing is scaled (421-422):

422 - AS I.82. Designs for three urns. Brown ink and grey wash over pencil sketching. The hanging garlands of the middle design have been crossed out with pencil. 183 x 294 mm. Watermark: arms of William III.

Note to 421-422: This pair of drawings can be confidently assigned to Grinling Gibbons (compare WS 4, pls. 35–36; WS 15, pl. 94; Green 1964, fig. 93), who executed work of this kind at Blenheim in 1708–12 (Green 1964, 126–33). The inscription on 421 implies a ducal patron, and the same watermark occurs in 359, which is dated 1712.
